The TPO has established a performance target of 100% sidewalk coverage within one mile of elementary, middle and high schools (sidewalk on at least one side of collector and arterial roads).
To help meet this target, the TPO evaluated sidewalk coverage within one mile of public schools in Polk County. This evaluation included a systematic Geographic Information System (GIS) based analysis to identify the schools that fall within the bottom third percentile for sidewalk coverage and then a more detailed analysis of sidewalk coverage and gaps will be conducted for the ten lowest scoring schools (least amount of sidewalk coverage).
The analysis identified existing sidewalks (and sidewalk network gaps) on collector and arterial roads within one‐mile of Polk County public schools. This analysis also include an evaluation of lighting conditions.
